It’s kind of strange that after so many years of living in Warsaw, we’d never taken our bikes to Zegrze Reservoir. Especially since it’s on the route we take when heading to Mario’s hometown. Time to finally fix that. We packed our bikes, brought some friends along, and went on a one-day trip from Warsaw.

Cycling around Zegrze Reservoir?

The idea to cycle around Zegrze Reservoir came partly from the book “By the Water. Micro-adventures from Warsaw.” My first thought was: let’s bike around the entire lake. Crazy? Maybe. But the plan quickly fell apart. There’s no cycling path all the way around. A quick look at the map showed a ferry crossing from Serock to Arciechów and back. I thought – perfect! Well, almost. The ferry only operates on weekends starting May 1st. And we visited the reservoir with our bikes at the end of April.

So, we had to plan a different route, taking those obstacles into account. One thing that stood out right away – it’s always good to be flexible and ready to change plans. And we definitely made use of that. More on that in a bit.ej.

Four kids, three adults, and 25 km
Originally, our plan looked like this:

We were supposed to ride over 30 km. That’s quite a lot for two pairs of 6-year-old legs. That’s why we gave ourselves the freedom to adjust the route as needed. But compromises sometimes bring surprises. When we changed and shortened the route, we ended up on stretches without bike paths and no way to ride along the shoulder. We had to ride right along the edge of the road, which wasn’t very comfortable. In the end, we cut the route by 5 km and didn’t make it to Arciechów (where the ferry departs).

Bike paths near Zegrze Reservoir
While looking for info about bike routes around the reservoir, I found out there are plans to build proper cycling infrastructure that will allow a full loop around Zegrze. Great idea – fingers crossed! Even though part of our route was on the road, most of it was actually on bike paths, some of them in beautiful settings, especially the ones near the water. Maybe it gets busier in high season – in fact, it probably does – but it’s still worth a quick trip out of Warsaw. Even just to see the “tropics” 40 km from the city. :)
